Large peaks in demand are caused by lots of people using electricity at the same time. Electricity cannot be stored easily so this is a big problem.
Traditionally energy companies matched the demand & supply of electricity by controlling the rate of generation. Because more and more renewable electricity is produced when the wind blows or the sun shines, rather than when we use it, this is becoming more difficult to achieve.
DR Bob explains how a European project called DR-BOB which stands for Demand Response in Blocks of Buildings is helping to solve this problem.
DR-BOB brings together 10 research and industrial organisations from across Europe. It is co-ordinated by Teesside University in the UK. .
