E-Map: Spatio-temporal modelling of traffic and emissions
Using a combination of data from Main Roads WA, governrment zoning data, and NASA satellite data on airborne pollution, our team have created a tool that maps emissions across the Perth metropolitan area: E-map!
It’s a multi-layered, easy-to-use app with the information every citizen and organisation should know about air quality and emissions in their local area.
The applications are endless, and benefits stretch from the common public good, to city planning.
The first layer shows the raw data: the vehicular speeds and volumes on the roads we have data for.
Here we’re showing our prediction of the volume of traffic on all of the roads in Perth.
Now we can bring in the satellite data to see how the emissions map on to our roads
And finally we can see how our local government areas have to deal with different amounts of emission from all the different roads.
For example, for the 2.3 million families in Australia affected by asthma, they can now make informed decisions as to where to live or send their children to school, based on the air quality of the area.
Infrastructure planners like Main Roads WA can now see the impact of transport routes on emissions, and aid the public health system by preventing air quality issues before they happen. The private health sector can also benefit: by factoring in this information during localised health assessments, the accuracy of health risk will be markedly improved.
The result will be cleaner cities, improved public health and smarter private health systems for us all to prosper from.
Relax, you can breathe easy.
