The critically acclaimed riverbank-scene from the film A Hard Day’s Night (starring Beatles drummer Ringo Starr) accompanies my coverversion of the song Act Naturally. As any Beatles-afficionado will know, Ringo Starr has his vocal solospot on the lp HELP! singing this very same song.
As I was looking for suitable material to illustrate my own rendition of the song in a musicvideo, I was struck by how the lyrics of Act Naturally seem to fit this particular scene from A Hard Day’s Night. In the story, Ringo is weary of the hectic, unnatural turmoil in which the four musicians find themselves 24 hours a day, besieged as they are by hysterical fans and a pushy tourmanager. At one point Ringo escapes from it all by putting on a disguise and simply walking away. On a riverbank he finds peace bumming around a bit.
Incidentally, there’s an anecdote that anyway, Ringo could do little more than ‘act naturally’ during the shooting of this scene, since that morning he was terribly hung over from going out the previous night.
I performed all the vocal and instrumental parts ‘live’, except for the hihat-, snare- and bassdrumparts, which are midi-sequences using standard Cubase-sounds.
For those of you interested: as you can see and hear, I tried to emulate the characteristic high-pitched percussion sound in the original Beatles-recording (rim shots?) using an instrument called ‘spoons’.
