- Making Songs is for Everyone -
The Human Sound Project was founded on the idea that musical education and equipment should never be a barrier to people experiencing the expressive joy and unifying power of making music together. As the old African proverb goes “if you can walk you can dance, if you can talk you can sing” - every person is a living instrument with a body that can create rhythm and movement, a voice that offers melodies, and a lifetime of stories that can become lyrics. Indeed, within every group of individuals, no matter their background or musical skill levels, there is the potential for a song just waiting to be made!
- Songmaking Unites Communities -
To test this idea, in 2014 with little more than a laptop, a microphone and a shoestring budget raised from a crowdfunding campaign, The Human Sound Project embarked on a Global Song Mission. It lasted just over 1.5 years and empowered more than 3,000 participants from 60 diverse groups on 6 continents to come together and collaboratively create new songs about their stories.
Through the power of song, groups who were otherwise divided on the basis of faith, race, age or culture were brought together and divisions were healed. For example: In the Middle East Israelis and Palestinians came together to create songs about their common humanity; disadvantaged youth in South Africa shared their song about how music had helped them through hard times; a musical forum for intergenerational dialogue was provided in City of God Favela in Rio De Janeiro; and intercultural musical collaborations took place between Muslim, Christian, Jewish and Indigenous communities in Australia.
Participants often began as alienated and conflicted individuals yet by the end of the session, created a shared composition that was sung with gusto by the entire group. During the experience, soulful stories were shared often accompanied by both tears and laughter. Body percussion, singing and storytelling uplifted each circle as voices were unlocked and people of different background were united in their song.
- A Global Village Through Song -
These stories and songs live on as the audio recordings and music videos continue to be shared by hundreds of thousands worldwide. Cross-cultural understanding and empathy was created not only within the groups who participated, but also in global audiences who continue to be touched by the stories, songs and achievements of the groups that took part. The Global Song Mission helps build a global village through song - connecting the stories and music of communities with a worldwide audience.
