"Electronic Divination: Surrender to the Machine!" by Rachel Weil
If computers are the future, does that mean they know the future? Fortune telling video games are a fun, nostalgic throwback to our teenage years and a subversive way to question the notion of "winning" a video game that requires surrendering all agency to unseen forces. Rachel will discuss her work developing two electronic fortune tellers ("Monkey Fortunetell" and "Electronic Sweet-N-Fun Fortune Teller") and their connection to her art.
Rachel Weil, artist & art historian, has made a name for herself writing custom art applications & games for the Nintendo NES console. She also chronicles and studies gender and the videogame industry as well as the history of games marketed to women for her site, femicom.org.
Rachel's talk is being co-sponsored by the Austin Museum of Digital Art .
