After seeing this inspirational reel of Hans Godard (vimeo.com/166291982) I was curious if his first demonstration is also possible inside C4D. With the awesome and free UV Deformer and UV To Object plugins from Michael Welters welter-4d.de/fplugs/freeplugins_en.html I was able to somewhat replicate the workflow of Mr Godard.
Huge thanks to the very talented David Weidemann, who pushed me into the right direction (davidweidemann.com)
The basic concept is to have an evenly laid out UV Grid for your object you want to clone onto. That's why I used a plane object because this primitive has a simple UV Grid to begin with and by copying the UV Tag to my Cloth piece I have a perfectly laid out UV Grid. I then used Hair for generating my tiles on the UV grid but a simple Cloner should also do the job. After that you just use the UV Deformer from Michael Welters and voilá, there's your tiles on the object. Any tips for improving the technique are highly welcomed :)
Here's the scenefile:
Note: If you want to connect all those tile ends just put the UV Deformer into a Connect Object and take it from there.
