Cuba’s First All-Female Drum Orchestra Breaks Taboo

Kamilia Lahrichi

Obini Bata, Cuba’s first all-female drum orchestra (and probably the first female bata band in the world), is breaking a taboo by stepping into a boy’s club and playing an instrument barred to women by religious law.

According to the Afro-Cuban religion of Santeria, only men can play bata drums because it is a sacred instrument used during religious ceremonies to communicate with the Gods.
