Parking in NYC is far from efficient. People regularly take advantage of the lack of effective parking regulation and enforcement in order to save that precious parking spot in front of their apartment or job.
This constant driving around and holding of spaces causes unnecessary pollution, congestion and delays in proper cleaning of the streets.
Why should people be allowed to park their personal property (car) on public ground (the street) without having to pay? Couldn't that money be going to good public services such as rapid transit and public transportation? What about that space that is being taken up with cars? Wouldn't it be better used as more pedestrian walkways, bus lanes or public park area?
