Inspired by hip hop veteran Dr. Dre (NWA) and prog rock pioneers Emerson, Lake & Palmer, The Planets is the new Lyn Faber hit out of the Hoboken lab of Lyndon Lorenz.
Turns out that Dre's been working for two years on an instrumental hip-hop epic, conceptually based around the planets. The ELP connection was a recent viewing of an amazing live performance of Pirates during their 1977 orchestral tour.
The public-domain source clip for the incredible footage here is The Solar System (1977), courtesy of the Academic Film Archive of North America at archive.org/details/solar_system_1977. Just about everything you see is animated model and matte work. This 17-minute film from Encyclopaedia Brittanica was directed by Tom Smith, who was a key talent on the development of the groundbreaking Star Wars films. Richard Basehart (Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea) is the narrator.
The original score was compiled in GarageBand using dozens of loops and beats from Apple Jam Packs and AMG. There was an awful lot of audio editing in this one; the whole production probably took about 25-30 hours over the course of a week.
