"Austins' Underground Frontier," by Justin Shaw
Like many cities throughout the world, parts of the City of Austin are built upon karst, a type of land terrain characterized by the dissolution of rock by water. This creates an unique underground wilderness that is still being explored and studied today. Over the last 3 years, by employing a team of Cave Specialists to restore, study, explore and map Austin's karst resources, the City of Austin Watershed Protection department has been a forerunner amongst municipal governments in the area of karst resource management. Come hear about this exciting work taking place in the tight spaces that are found below Austin.
Justin Shaw is a Cave Specialist who has been exploring caves for well over two decades. Today he is employed as an Environmental Scientist Associate for the City of Austin Watershed Protection Department Cave Team. .
