Each of the movements of String Quartet No. 1 takes their name and inspiration from a mostly unsung voyager from the annals of history. Mrs. Chippy was an explorer aboard the Endurance, the ill-fated ship of Sir Ernest Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914. Félicette was an astronaut who made a 15-minute suborbital flight in 1963 on a capsule launched by the French rocket Véronique. Each of these intrepid explorers faced untold dangers and tribulations on their respective journeys. None of them returned unaffected, if they returned at all.
Both were also cats.
This quartet is dedicated to the memory of Winston Bell, our own voyager, who departed on his interdimensional journey in January of this year.
