Yackez, created by Larissa Velez-Jackson and writer/musician Jon Velez-Jackson with their Queer dance ensemble, is a dance-theater critique of pop celebrity. This new work in progress culminates their body of underground performances into a large-scale dance musical in two acts. The 25-30 minute group improvisation of character development, movement, and partnering is based on the meeting place between partner improvisation forms like Tango and pro-wrestling maneuvers. Larissa Velez-Jackson is a professional ballroom dance instructor. Jon Velez-Jackson is a wrestling fanatic, the band wrestling coach and occasionally covers sports entertainment in writing. The sound score features a live-mix/deconstruction of Yackez’s previous songs to create abstract soundscapes that foreground the experimental dancing. The final show will feature the debut of older adults from Velez-Jackson’s citywide dance-fitness classes, creating a multi-generational interdisciplinary radical wellness spectacle.
