Decades of war in Mozambique decimated large animal populations in Gorongosa National Park, an area of amazing diversity of ecosystems and wildlife. Some populations are rebounding due to a large-scale restoration effort. A collaboration between the Howard Hughes Medical Institue, Gorongosa National Park, and the citizen science website The Zooniverse, WildCam Gorongosa enagages citizen scientists and students in Gorongosa conservation research. Visitors to the website identify animals captured in trail cam photos throughout the park. These identifications are then used by park scientists to monitor the biodiversity of the park and the health of its ecosystems. WildCam has over 23,000 volunteers who have completed over 3 million classifications, and is one of the most popular project on The Zooniverse.
