Based on the poem Bonsho by Diana Engel as part of the 2016 Greensboro Poetry Walk
Using Diana's bells that inspired her poem, I recorded an audio file of the bells and rinsing of my mother's brass pot from her time overseas. The bells were given to Diana by her mother. I loved that these items shared this in common. Plus, the poem speaks of a woman overlooking the ancestral land as she rinsed the pot. In my mother's kitchen, I overlooked the woods behind my childhood home, which has been in my family since the early 1800s.
I used SoundViz to create a visual representation of the sound, which will be a central image to the final art installation.
This piece will be displayed in Elsewhere's Garden in Greensboro, NC from September through early November 2016.
