During the rainy season in Thailand it's a common sight to see young boys wandering around with a stick of Sugar-cane in their hand. If you look close though, you will see something moving - something you might not expect. That ugly creepy crawly attached to the stick with a piece of cotton tied around it's horn is a Stag Beetle...
Towards the end of the rainy season is the mating season for Stag Beatles and they can get a bit feisty when a female is around. So Thais, with there great sense of fun and there love of a flutter on anything that moves stage Beetle Battles on any spare piece of land they can find.
A female Stag Beetle is placed inside a hollowed-out piece of wood (look carefully on the video and you should make it out) and the two battling beetles are placed on top. They can detect the scent of the female below so they battle it out for the mating rights. Just like old-fashioned log fights the winner is the one who manages to push their love-rival off the wood.
