The Waziya cinema, formally known as The Excelsior during colonial times, was constructed in the 1920’s and is the oldest theatre in Yangon. In an attempt to modernise and compete with its regional competitors, Yangon's historic neighbourhoods are being flattened. The Waziya was closed to the public in 2015 and it now silently awaits its fate.
I photographed in and around the cinema during the last six months of it's working life in 2014. I spent much of my time up in the projection room with the small team of projectionists. When not photographing, I documented life on an iPhone and although shaky and grainy, this is a small insight into life inside the Waziya's projection room.
