“Searching For The Invisible Woman” takes as its starting point the fact that many middle aged women often complain about being invisible in the eyes of society. They are ignored in the street and overlooked in queues.
They are passed over for promotion at work or expected to care for ageing relatives, putting their own dreams on hold. Having served their purpose as child-rearers but not yet achieved the patronising status of "treasure" that often comes with old age, they literally become greyed out. Wanting to ascertain how true this was I conducted a questionnaire and series of interviews with middle-aged women from a variety of backgrounds. The results inform the soundtrack to this animation, which was shown as part of a wider textile exhibition of the same name at Festival of Quilts 2015 and at Stockport Art Gallery 2016.
