“One by one they were all becoming shades. Better pass boldly into that other world, in the full glory of some passion, than fade and wither dismally with age.”
James Joyce – The Dead
Bringing together live music, aerial acrobatics, fire, dance and mime, Becoming Shades is a story of empowerment, love and choices: a re-imagining of the classic myth of Persephone told through contemporary circus. Fragments, movements and tableaus, references and costume combine to create a show that is full of hope and sorrow. A dream, a memory, an echo; this shifting, cyclical tale creates an emotional tapestry of ideas and impressions that make up a dark and cerebral journey.
All music for Becoming Shades has been composed by Sam West and Becks Johnstone.
Formed in early 2012 by Edward Gosling and Laurane Marchive, Chivaree is a circus production company that have performed across the UK, Europe, Middle East and North Africa. At the centre of their work is a fascination with beauty and how it can be created through aesthetic and performance. Heavily inspired by literature, they look to create stories and ideas through movement and costume. They have previously created shows for major international festivals, performed at some of the most hedonistic parties and club nights in London and have broken world records live on stage.
