The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) put its 'repair not restore' philosophy into action this summer at a medieval church in Hampshire.
Building conservation experts and enthusiastic volunteers spent a week at Greatham Old Church lime washing exterior walls, repairing masonry, repointing and adding an innovative soft capping (grass and other plants placed on top of a ruin to protect it from the elements). The church, built in 1262, fell into disuse after the dedication of the new church in 1875.
