Welcome back. In India, there have more incidents involving attacks on churches. A mob in central Jabalpur city set fire to a 150-year-old cathedral.
India's central Madhya Pradesh state is the latest province to be hit following other attacks in the east of the country. The altar and statues inside the St. Peter and St. Paul Cathedral were burned in the fire. The church was closed at the time.
Angered by the recent attacks the Christians feel they are becoming vulnerable targets. The church's priest says the attacks are politically motivated.
[Davis George, Priest]:
"They burned our church. The moment we heard about it, we came to the church. Upon entering we found that our prayer things were burnt, an idol of crucified Jesus was also burned. What they are doing in Karnataka, they want to do it here also. They want to gain political mileage by doing all this. This
is not justified."
Authorities say they are investigating the fire.
[Hariranjan Rao, District Magistrate]:
"At around 8 p.m. two youths entered the church through a window and set it on fire, causing a lot of damage to the church. We have lodged a complaint against them and are investigating the matter."
Violent clashes last month left around 16 Christians' dead and forced up to ten thousand more to flee their homes.
