This is a tale as old as modern civilization and as current as breaking news everywhere. I might be happening in the next town or on the dark streets outside your door. It is time to take a hard look at what is going on here that has turned the American dream into an unholy nightmare.
At first glance, it looks like a anywhere in Suburbia, USA. It's just before dawn and all is silent. An alarm clock sounds and in an instant, the street is teeming with activity. This is the story of Timothy James ("TJ") Williams, a cop heading very shortly toward retirement, his family, friends and the town in which they live and work. He and his partner of over 10 years, have helped keep the community safe and relatively free from the kind of corruption that plagues so many other communities.
There is nothing unusual about the William's. They are simply another working class family and today is another typical day of policing. TJ and Angel are headed to court to try and keep another 'perp' from walking free on their streets. Yet, by the end of this day TJ's life and the lives of those close to him will be forever changed. He will be labeled a 'murderer', unwelcomed in his home and community. On this day, he will make a snap decision that alters the course of his life, forcing him to confront many of the other bad decisions he's made in the past.
Bonnie, a young girl that TJ tries to free from a life of teenage prostitution is murdered, his son appears to be caught up in the drug traffic plaguing their town, and TJ will unthinkingly gun down his son's best friend, a promising young black man, the
pride of the community and practically a second son to him. He begins drinking non-stop to avoid thinking about what he has done, alienating his partner, his wife, his children even his exlover.
Those he has hurt in the past either exact their revenge
or turn their backs on him. In his lost and drunken state TJ
turns to Fiona, the grandmother of the boy he has killed, for
forgiveness. Fiona directs him to the church across the street,
suggesting that he look for forgiveness there.
Broken, lost and in unbearable pain, TJ stumbles to the church,
only to find its doors locked against him. In tears TJ sinks to
his knees and begs the almighty to let him in. His prayers are
answered, as a hand is laid upon his shoulder. The hand belongs
to Dave who leads TJ to the church basement and his first AA
meeting. Here he encounters people with stories every bit as
harrowing as his own and this gives him hope.
The remainder of the night is spent wandering the streets of his
town, where he eventually finds himself at the very spot where
Bonnie had been murdered. Here TJ discovers evidence that
ultimately leads to Bonnie's murderer's and sets up a showdown
with those in his town who would abuse their power for personal
In the process TJ makes amends with those he has hurt in the past
and finds his way back into the family that he loves. This is a
tale of the fallen and the redeemed. A lifetime of bad choices
cannot be turned around in a single day, but as TJ discovers
finding the right road to take, is the first step on the path to
