Bea stumbled upon David J Roch a few months back when he was supporting I Am Arrows’ on their UK tour. Likened to “a young hot Dylan Moran” by her mate (who shall remain nameless!), David’s beautiful lyrics complemented by his disarmingly powerful voice show promise of huge things in the future. David was the ideal candidate for our sophomore session.
Within minutes of Matt and David meeting a couple of weeks later, the session date had been set and David, along with two of his band mates journeyed from Sheffield to London to play in front of a group of our friends partying in a tiny flat on Caledonian Road. His shy disposition softened with a few beers, the room fell silent as David’s confident voice and heartfelt lyrics took over.
Three short animations accompany this film as Matt experimented with different techniques. The flowers growing on the ceiling alter your perception, the ink swirl in the bass drum represent the flow of music and the party going on around it and the burning wall simply an experiment in aesthetics and technique.
David is currently completing his debut album, which is produced by “the tallest man in rock and roll”, James Sclavunos, drummer for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and is due out early 2011.
