An old friend of Joe’s from college, poet and musician Kevin Tuffy, joined us on Brick Lane one Sunday afternoon for our first venture out with Matt’s new camera and Joe’s mic.
Despite being extremely hung over, to the point where his hands shook uncontrollably during the first few songs, Kevin happily belted out his tunes along the road, battling against the roar of the Sunday traders and dodging the heavy traffic. What with his charismatic personality along with his rhapsodic folk style and candid lyrics, it’s hard not to be instantly won over by this guy’s charm.
Perhaps best known for “O Dearest Daughter” a track that he recorded a few years ago with his friend Laura Marling, sadly it seems, while his folk peers were hitting it big in the mainstream in 2010, Kevin focused his creative talents on his raw lyrical poetry.
It was for this reason we decided to animate one his many poems. The animation came about as London was brought to standstill due to the heavy snow in mid-December. Filmed in the studio of Creative Designer and Make up Artist, Natasha Lawes with her amazing props and masks and with make up by Phoenix, model Tom Crossland personified Kevin’s haunting musings. And through the magic of Skype, Kevin recorded his reading in the comfort of his bedroom in West London with Matt and Joe giving direction from Joe’s bedroom in South London.
Kevin continues to gig around London and is putting the finishing touches to his new album. Check him out.
