Selvmord - Et samfundsproblem
Skal vi bare stiltidende acceptere at der begås selvmord?
Sometimes, tasks come up with issues that are socially difficult to handle and that can be taboo. This video is one of a kind.
Greenland has a suicide rate which is among the highest in the world.
Almost everyone in Greenland knows about people who have committed suicide, and perhaps therefore the subject has been very little debated among the population.
That is exactly why there was a fund board of the NunaFonden that took the initiative to produce a video that should help the population start to speak more openly about the problem. The requirement was that different people and professional areas should be interviewed.
The project was offered in a kind of tender, where I then "won" the assignment.
I had not experienced suicide among my own family, and for that very reason I felt that I wanted to be able to view the problem with a general and neutral objectivity.
I could not take a subjective angle, as I did not have much understanding of the subject either.
This has often been the case with the many kinds of work assignments I have been assigned over the years. I start from scratch and have to research the topic and understand it before I can produce an information product that is understandable to other people.
There is really no specific reason why people commit suicide, which is why this task has been difficult from the start. It took a lot of interviews and a lot of hearings before an understandable pattern began to emerge that could be embedded in the approx. 30 minutes I had been allocated to disseminate the information.
After the broadcast via the Greenlandic public TV station, KNR-TV, many people thanked me for highlighting the topic in a good and informative way that created a clearer view of the problem.
