Word from the director…
I have worked in Palestine on various theatre projects over the past 10 years. In that time I have seen an intense increase in the level of oppression. I am constantly impressed by people’s resistance through friendships and art. But when I go back home, I am constantly surprised by how little people know about the situation. Most British people I meet do not know that the problem of Palestine is a British problem. When I talk about the occupation, the word does not seem to resonate. I love my language, but I often feel English can be rather dishonest. A toilet is occupied, you may be asked: “What is your occupation?”; the word does not reflect the realities in the West Bank and Gaza today. So I wanted to create a piece of work for people outside, to give an image of occupation, without words. This play is not the whole truth, it is not factual, but it is something of a truth. Ashtar have brought their experience to my initial idea and made the show a reality. We offer you an image, and we hope it will spark discussion. Thanks to Ashtar and thank you for watching.
