Rev. Tony Lorenzen's sermon from 09/28/2008 at Pathways Church in Southlake, TX.
Three of the first six United States presidents were Unitarians. One (Jefferson) advocated erecting a wall between church and state while another (John Adams) wanted to model the presidency after the British
monarchy and make America a Christian nation. Today many churches across the country, pastors aligned with the Alliance Defense Fund will give sermons endorsing John McCain for President in direct violation of IRS rules governing churches and non profits. Americans United for Separation of Church and State describes the Alliance Defense Fund as “a theocracy-minded legal operation founded by right-wing religious broadcasters.” What do we make of this? How do we live out our values and principles and purposes as Unitarian Universalists in a polarized election season, while still standing up for our beliefs (and acting upon them) and obeying the law? Rev. Tony will explore the wall between church and state and why it's important to keep it strong and sure.
