Foolish Pleasures 1985

Serni Solidarios

Back when SBUX and MSFT weren't yet public, cellphones were still bricks, and The Beach Boys were already"old" and celebrating their silver anniversary, FOOLISH PLEASURES was already a major annual production at University of Puget Sound. While a student film festival was first attempted in 1976 as The Creativity Celebration, by the 80's Foolish Pleasures was annually drawing SRO crowds of up to 800 in Great (now Marshall) Hall, with many others following the searchlight to view the Parade of Stars. Conceived in the ASUPS Student Programs Office, and shepherded through its infancy by Campus Films Chair Josh Sherwin, with an supporting cast which included Chase Nordlund, Diana Lund Nordlund, Bob Burns, Tim Kehrli and David Poston, it began with 8mm film with soundtracks dubbed separately onto cassettes. Later Super 8mm allowed integrated sound. For the record, the title Foolish Pleasures was not derived from the name of the Kentucky Derby winner of that era; rather it was coined by Josh and I late one night - probably at one of the clubs I was moonlighting music at - as a mirthful way to celebrate April Fools Day, and as such it is usually scheduled on the first weekend of April. Josh later incorporated the Doobie Brothers Hit, "What A Fool Believes" as a sort of official soundtrack, and several generations of winning film casts would earn the high honor of imprinting their hands and feet into concrete, ala Grauman's Chinese Theatre in L.A. Foolish Pleasures was showcased at NACA National conferences, and soon UPS's creation spawned similar programs at the U. of Kentucky, Brigham Young, and The Air Force Academy. The project also helped some UPS students launch careers in film and comedy. This 1985 collection includes quick cameos by President Philip Phibbs, the Dean of Students Office (Dave Dodson, Jim Davis, Bob Stremba) Todd Badham, ASUPS Presidents Mike Brown and Steve Emery and many, many others. Some soundtracks are lost, but new discoveries are happening every day, so Logger Alumni from other years who participated in Foolish Pleasures may yet find themselves on this digitized silver screen. Take a look back to an earlier era before home video...and ENJOY!
