Michelle studied Sustainability at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and holds an MBA with a concentration in Marketing from Simmons College School of Management with a BA in International Political Economies from Ripon College. Michelle started her own company Surpass Business Consulting in 2011.
Before founding her own company, Michelle spent 20+ years in business management, focusing on maximizing revenue for non-profit and healthcare clients and communities. She has worked with companies to ensure full compliance from agencies such as HRSA, NIH, Department of Defense, and HUD in order to qualify for funding opportunities. This opened the door for client companies to access larger pools of funding with successes ranging up to $12 million.
After obtaining her Master in Business Administration, Michelle began looking at ways that sometimes costly business tools could be done more simply and cheaply. She began visiting small local businesses, mainly with Spanish speaking or immigrant owners, to begin to assess needs. The results were not surprising. There was very little target marketing; most didn’t know what their customers (or their competitors and their customers) thought of their products or services; 100% of these business owners knew nothing about their business model, doing business with public funded entities, nor diversifying revenue streams. Over 90% haphazardly assigned pricing, described their business as barely scraping by, and didn’t know what type of entity or company they were. As a result, she started Surpass Business Consulting, where her passion and expertise have combined with a need to offer REAL business assistance for the 99% of business owners. Most recently, she has developed a new program, the OWNmba, which takes tools from the MBA and modifies them to work for the small business owner.
