London’s last rostrum studio faces an uncertain future in the face of a digital revolution.
For 29 years Chris King has owned and operated ‘King Camera’, a magical rostrum studio hidden deep inside Soho.
In its heyday, the rostrum camera was at the technological edge of modern film production. They are motorised camera system that animate pictures or objects. Rostrums are a fantastic tool for all kinds of storytelling, used in animation to record cell frames and in documentary to bring pictures to life.
There once were many rostrums in London but one by one they have disappeared. Technology marched on and new digital methods made the work easier and cheaper.
Chris King is a 40+ year veteran of the TV and Film industry. He’s made hundreds if not thousands of animations, films and commercials; Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’ and the much celebrated ‘Willo the Wisp’.
Chris is total pro, and a lovely guy! Check out more of his work here: kingcamera.co.uk/
