"To fans of Laurel & Hardy, the music of Leroy Shield is like the holy grail. Although it is an essential ingredient of almost all their movies, little about the music or its composer is known. When former employees of the Hal Roach Studios were first interviewed by serious researchers back in the 1970s, the general consensus was that these background tunes had no titles and were referred to by numbers only. Furthermore, with the exception of the features Fra Diavolo (1935) and Our Relations (1936), Leroy Shield’s name was not credited in any film. There were no commercial recordings available, no sheet music, no written records of any kind. The only music most people associated with Laurel & Hardy was their theme song – Marvin Hatley’s “Ku-Ku.” [...]"
