The canals of Santos were built between the years of 1905 and 1927. They were part of a great sanitation plan that, including a piped sewage system, eradicated epidemics and drained the waterlogged soil, making the Port’s development and the city’s expansion possible.
Created by the sanitarian engineer Saturnino de Brito, the plan was a pionner in Brazil due to the two separated systems: one for the pluvial waters and another for the sewage.
Blended to the urban landscape and proclaimed symbols of the city’s health, the canals bring us the beautiful civic lesson of looking to the future.
