CCCI Lecture Series: Professor Darrin Magee (Associate Professor of Environmental Studies, Asian Studies, Hobart & William Smith Colleges) - "Damming China: Challenges and Opportunities for Decarbonizing China's Power Sector with Hydroelectricity"
September 26, 2016
China has the world’s greatest hydropower reserves, yet has developed less than half of them. As the country’s leadership looks to green its energy sector and address increasingly serious air, water, and soil pollution nationwide, hydropower is set to play a key role in the medley of non-fossil electricity sources deployed over the coming decades. Yet while the benefits of hydropower are often geographically diffuse, the negative consequences are often acute and geographically concentrated near the dam and downstream. This talk will examine the various ways hydropower fits in lower-carbon electricity future for China, and how the negative impacts might best be assessed and mitigated.
