The Migration Dance Film Project is a series of eight short films linked together into a 52-minute work illustrating the beauty and complexity of transformative journeys.
Each film explores an aspect of a migratory experience. 9 artists travel continuously as song, rhythm, movement and landscape guide them along the way. These performances share stories of communal voyage and individual transformation. Viewers are invited along as fellow travelers.
Sandy has chosen artists from different disciplines to collaborate and create an artistic pratice that moves beyond traditional body percussion. Choreographer Sandy Silva is a pioneer and innovator of a very personal and original form of percussive dance. She has spent the last 30 years performing as a solo artist, teaching and touring around the world.
An award-winning filmmaker with a background in contemporary dance, Marlene Millar has been creating dance media projects for over 25 years. The project comes to life as she transposes choreography to the screen, creating a poignant visual language that reveals the intricacies of these migratory stories.
Together, choreographer Sandy Silva and filmmaker Marlene Millar use the nuanced dynamics, emotion and precision of percussive dance to shape a powerful cinematic storyline. The group’s members have a special and deep collaborative relationship through a shared love of learning and exploring rhythm, movement and vocals.
The journey continues with our next production: Traverse, a film exploring change, strength and ingenuity. The film will be shot on location in Saint-Étienne France, and co-produced with Stéla – DesArts / DesCinés. The cast will be joined by a group of local residents. Our goal is to raise $25,000. please help us complete funding production costs for Traverse. Every dollar you contribute will go to covering artists’ fees, travel and equipment rental costs.
