This is a documentary project inspired in Bhutan and its sustainable notions of happiness based on Buddhist values and sound governance.
Bhutan has a unique official policy of Gross National Happiness in stark contrast to the Gross National Product(GNP)
In 2008 I attended the GNH conference in Thimphu where, to my surprise 25 countries were being represented.
As a sovereign nation, Bhutan has many notable distinctions.
First, it is the only existing Vajrayana Buddhist Kingdom in the world.
Second, it is one of the few countries in Asia that has never been colonized.
Third in face of enormous pressures of globalization, Bhutan has successfully maintained its ancient culture, arts, and religious lineages intact.
GNH is based on the premise that the calculation of "wealth" should consider other aspects besides economic development: the preservation of the environment and the quality of life of the people. The goal of a society should be the integration of material development with psychological, cultural, and spiritual aspects – all in harmony with the Earth.
The guiding measures of GNH:
1) Sustainable and equitable socio-economic development,
2) Conservation of environment,
3) Preservation and promotion of culture,
4) Promotion of good governance.
