rivethatflowsbothways is a four-channel video installation that may be configured according to a venue's interior dimensions and design. Images in each of the 3 video channels are a collection of observations from reflections along the banks of two river estuaries: the Hudson (in Greene County, NY) and the Garonne (in Auvillar, France) This video combines all 4 channels. Each (including the audio) is played as a loop of approximately 13 minutes in length. The loops are non-synchronized so that viewers experience ever-changing combinations. In continuous play, any combination of all four channels will not repeat for 7 years, 4 months, 3 days, 2 hours, 9 minutes and 17 seconds.
Composer Scott D. Miller's score is a series of variations on hymn-based chords; in the same way that the images are variations on visual phenomena associated with reflected light on water. The string ensemble includes 2 violins, viola, cello and bass.
