Canvas has been a part of the raw creative culture in Chicago for four years now. In that time, we have noticed that culture, ourselves included, is lacking definition and awareness of itself. It is certainly there, but in a more subtle and undeveloped way. It does not yet fully express itself because it does not yet fully believe it can.
A creative culture is made up of individuals. Each individual has a unique perspective on the collective. Each unique perspective, if shared effectively, has the ability to inform and evolve the collective. “Nearly There” is dedicated to exploring the perspectives of the individual, so as to inform the collective.
In each episode of the series, we seek out individuals that, through their work, are expressing core truths and perspectives about the Chicago creative culture. By exploring, capturing, and publishing those perspectives, we hope to gradually begin to gain a deeper understanding of the creative cultures existence. Over time, this will empower it.
In this first episode, we talk to cross-stitch artist Emma Mckee. After this piece is released, we will listen to reactions, pay attention to conversations, reflect on the piece, and then let that determine what direction the next episode goes. We invite you to be a part of this journey.
