Artist statement:
Lily is based upon the idea that we can create intricate behaviour using a single processor with a limited set of rules, that is able to talk to its neighbour. By adding more neighbours, patterns start to emerge based on the rules and the locations of each Lily looking at just one Lily you are not able to find the pattern, zooming out and viewing the group as a whole the patterns become clear and the organism is born. Lily consist of an infinitely expandable group of microprocessors that communicate with each other using radio frequency. The communication with their neighbours is not linear. The layout of the organism randomly spread out in their marine habitat. Giving homo sapiens sapiens a nice overview of the whole organism and its behaviour. The Lilies are self controlled, they decide upon colours, intensities, and speed. They control their neighbours, allowing them to send messages in all directions of the lake. This can be compared to the way a neural net functions. The way light finds its way over the lake is also based on outside factors, such as wind, wake, and objects on shore. Each Lily has the same hardware/code running, and it functions in the same way. But by having them make decisions and interpretations on each of the generated messages, unpredictable patterns emerge inside of the organism. This leads to conversations on the lake that are not fully predictable by us, thus becoming an autonomous organism.
