William Shatner, a Canadian author, once said: „You know, the process of making a documentary is one of discovery. And like writing a story, you follow a lead and that leads you to something else. And then by the time you finish, the story is nothing like you expected.“
This documentary "Remember Our Name" is more than I expected. It gives a very close insight into the lives of Daniel and Joakim, the two best friends, founders and band members of Friska Viljor. The film tells a story about their lives, their friendship and the meaning of family in Sweden.
Through the possibility of shooting over 4 weeks, the film sets itself apart through creating a special closeness to the characters - not only the camera was able to come very close but also the topics got deeper and deeper. The more minutes of the film you watch, the more you can really understand where they are coming from and feel very connected to the protagonists. While Daniel and Joakim have been best friends since more than twenty years, you will be surprised about how different their characters are. Comparing them in terms of their daily energy-level: Daniel is a light bulb turned on and when it comes to Joakim, all lights are out.
I have always been wanting to do a portrait of musicians - having the possibility to directly merge the produced imagery with their own music is the clue. If you find the correct way to bring both layers together, you can create something very powerful - both in atmosphere and authenticity - and I feel like I was able to achieve that.
