The Arkansas Rice Festival, held during the second weekend of October in Weiner, was founded to promote the consumption of Arkansas rice and to celebrate the state's status as the premiere rice producer in the country. A signatory event of each Rice Festival has been the free rice-tasting meal with several hundred rice dishes provided by local residents. Arkansas Rice Festival off-site events have included activities such as tractor pulls, basketball tournaments, 5K runs, fishing rodeos,
and senior citizens’ suppers. A rice cook-off sponsored by Riceland Foods features cash prizes. Throughout festival history, visiting dignitaries have included former Arkansas governors such as Bill Clinton, Dale Bumpers, and David Pryor. It coincides with National Rice Promotion Month and the final days of Arkansas' annual rice harvest.
