The Firmament describes the images presented in Genesis 1:6-8. The flow of “time and water” and images of “ the sky and the universe” are featured in bassoon and live-electronics transformed by Max/MSP. Bassoon and real time processing of granular sounds are interactively joined together in the piece. The granular sounds are designated in three groups as follows: main grain-sound, popping grain-sound, and low grain-sound. The grained sounds represent diverse flows of fluids.
This performance–the American premiere–was part of "Sonic Explorations: Resonate Bass," a concert series featuring new electronic and computer music composed by students and faculty at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). This particular concert featured three solo instruments from the lowest range of the pitch spectrum: bassoon, double-bass and tuba.
