Florida Man + Florida Woman is a stop motion animation based on actual news headlines that begin with..."Florida Man..." The prominence of extravagant blunders, crimes, and events that take place in Florida have inspired various sub-reddits, forums, and twitter accounts dedicated solely to featuring these stories. In this work Cristina Molina and Jonathan Traviesa, both Florida natives, are characterized as the main protagonists. Throughout the video these caricatures enact seemingly unbelievable scenarios such as marrying a ferris wheel, spray painting wild birds, and butt dialing 911 while cooking meth.
The animation was produced on the occasion of Cristina Molina + Jonathan Traviesa's collaborative exhibition "Sad Tropics." Inspired by the title of Claude Levi-Strauss’s book, "Tristes Tropiques," the work focuses on the psychological landscape of paradise, the tropics, and more specifically—the mythology of Florida. Through site-specific photo murals, videos, and a themed gift shop installation, the artists, celebrate and critique the eccentricities of the Floridian aspiration.
