Informed consumption can already be seen in the food sector, where contents of food are displayed on packaging along with nutritional information. This allows the consumer to make an informed purchase in store. So how could this work for products?
Outgredients works in a similar way. By taking four factors that determine a products environmental impact - Energy, waste, Co2 and miles travelled, Outgredients calculates and compares the product against similar products from competing companies. From this information Outgredients provides a ranking. This ranking allows consumers to asses and compare a products environmental impact with a quick glance, allowing for an informed, sustainable-led purchase.
A product’s Outgredients can be accessed either in store via a mobile app and the scanning of the barcode, through the Outgredients website or through a 3rd party retailer if they decide to use Outgredients API. Consumers are faced with choices everyday. But finding out what choice is more sustainable is often time-consuming and can be misleading due to green-washed marketing initiatives and vauge certificate logos. Outgredients goal is to answer the question “what’s more sustainable” in an effective and non-intrusive manner.
