The Turnaround Zone combines two evidence-based approaches -- expanded learning time (ELT) and social and emotional learning (SEL) -- to increase students' readiness to learn and their academic performance.
ELT, as piloted by The After-School Corporation (TASC), increases learning time during the school year by at least 35 percent -- equal to 60 extra school days. Schools partner with community organizations to deliver academics and enriching experiences that excite and motivate students. They have time to personalize learning using next-generation tools.
SEL, as implemented by Morningside Center for Teaching Social Responsibility, is the process by which children develop their "people skills" to handle the problems, worries and conflicts that can get in the way of learning.
