The University of Virginia New Music Ensemble plays Invisible Signals by Max Tfirn. The composition uses an electromagnetic microphone, computer and open instrumentation. During the piece the microphone pics up electromagnetic waves and the computer analyzes the waves for peak frequency content. The computer then notates the notes in a scale for the performers to see. The performers then listen to the electronic sound and the look at the notes on the screen and improvise to blend their instrument sound with the electronic sound.
