In this teaching, you will learn that when you accepted Christ, the Holy Spirit took your old spirit man out of you, and put a brand new spirit man within you. You literally walked away from your experience a “whole new man.” Prior to your “new birth,” your physical body housed a merely “human spirit,” that was given life by the pro-creation of your parents. You were 100% human being. Apostle Paul often speaks of the “old man” and the “new man.” Perhaps you thought he was only speaking in metaphors, trying to get you to change your way of life. But in fact, Paul knew that your physical body was never “you.” You are a “spirit being” living in an earthly body. When he spoke of the “old” and “new” man, he was speaking in actual terms.
We start with these facts:
1) You are a spirit being; 2) You possess a soul [Made up of your will, intellect and emotions]; 3) You live in a body [Your earth-suit, designed exclusively to enable you to make contact with physical things]. These three facts are vital for you to understand who you were before accepting Christ, and what occurred at the time you said “Yes” to Jesus.
Look at the above again and notice: You are not your physical body! You are a spirit being, housed within a physical body. Your body is, simply put, a house in which you live for the purpose of making contact with this physical world. For you to fully understand God’s plan and purpose for you, as a believer in Christ, and for the Church, the body of Christ, it is also vital that you know these additional facts as it pertains to you as a Christian:
1) Who you are; 2) Where you came from; 3) How you got here; 4) What you are here for [your purpose]; and 5) Where you are going.
Now, to fully understand these facts, clearly found in scripture, you also need to understand who you were before you accepted Christ, with respect to the above actualities. We will begin with what happened when you became a “new creature” in Christ as Paul declared:
2Corinthians 5:17 GNB “Anyone who is joined to Christ is a new being; the old is gone, the new has come.”
But what exactly does this mean, “the old is gone, the new has come?” Maybe only one out of 100,000 Christian believers give it much though beyond the idea that they now have a relationship with Christ. But it is so much more. And it is this additional knowledge that positions us to understand why God would orchestrate the event of “The Day of Jehovah Tsaba” just for us!
So what actually happened when you accepted Christ?
1) He “took” the old spirit out of you, and put a totally new spirit within you. [Remember, YOU ARE A SPIRIT!] It is important to distinguish that this is not merely “giving a new nature” to you, as some attempt to claim. He doesn’t give a new nature to you, HE DESTROYS YOU as you were, and HE CREATES WITHIN YOU A NEW SPIRIT, one that is literally born of Almighty God!
There is so much more to this divine process that most understand. While it is true that deep within the recess of your spirit, there exists a “new nature,” a literally transition took place as God removed from your physical being the spirit that was attached to your soul from your human birth. Then he created and planted within you a brand new spirit (a new man) and that new spirit became attached to your existing soul within your physical body. In point of fact from a scientific, biological aspect, you literally physically died when you accepted Christ! The Apostle James declares:
James 2:26 MSG “The very moment you separate body and spirit, you end up with a corpse. Separate faith and works and you get the same thing: a corpse.”
So, If the Holy Spirit, at your “new birth,” literally overshadowed you (much like He did Mary at Jesus’ conception but not for an original birth, but for the purpose of being “born again,” and removed from your being the original human spirit, and replaced it with one that came from the “incorruptible seed of the Word of God which lives and abides forever,” (1Peter 1:23), then for a “divine microsecond” you were dead , as he removed the old original human spirit out of you and replaced it with a sprit that came out of the loins of Almighty God (through the agency of the seed of the Word of God, which is God – John 1:1). You went from being a mere totally natural human being, to that of a Child (or son) of God. That is what Apostle Paul was referencing when he said in our above verse in 2Corinthians, “Anyone who is joined to Christ is a new being; the old is gone, the new has come.”
Speaking of this “new birth,” Ezekiel, the OT prophet, records it this way, as we see then that God takes the old spirit out of you and places within your body a “new spirit”.
