"Cultural Appropriations, Stereotypes, and Native Peoples in Popular Culture"
Native scholar, writer, blogger, and activist, Dr. Adrienne Keene (Cherokee Nation) explores the appropriation of Native cultures in popular media. Her blog, Native Appropriations, tackles topics as varied as the mass production of squash blossom necklaces, sports mascots, and Halloween costumes. In conjunction with our Indian Arts Market, Keene highlights the value of authentic Native arts and their role in affirming Native cultural identity and artistic integrity. Dr. Keene is an assistant professor of American Studies at Brown University.
