MISTISSINI HEALING is a short documentary about Cree youth overcoming their struggles in the midst of a system that has set them up to fail.
In this documentary, you will meet youth who are intergenerational survivors of the Residential School system, struggling with broken families, mental illness, suicidal inclinations, dropping out of high school and substance abuse, and watch how they ultimately cope with isolation, loss of traditional culture and silence by seeking various forms of healing from these byproducts of the Residential School system. Aboriginal youth are the fastest growing demographic in Canada, while the aboriginal suicide rate is six times that of non-aboriginal youth, therefore this issue should be of national priority. This will be explored through the relationships I have built with the youth of Mistissini through my involvement in previous socially engaged art and leadership projects.
