A three-channel installation by Pauliina Salminen and Mouna Jemal Siala, Under the surface is a video installation looking at the individual's feeling of revolt and the difficulty of expressing it. People at two sides of the Mediterranean, in Tunis and in Marseille try to shout out their message, immerged in the sea. The water is seen here as a contradictory element, it may carry or drown, it cradles or suffocates, it modifies one's movements and muffels one's words. The underwater images from both sides of the sea respond to each other. In between, the images of peoples faces are multiplied and transformed, they form constellations and arabesques and finally disappear, just as do the expressions of anger or feelings of injustice shouted towards the other side.
