Anciennement de l’Office national du film du Canada, où il a réalisé, entre 1965 et 1999, une vingtaine de courts métrages d’animation et un long métrage (La Plante humaine, prix du meilleurs long métrage de l’année 1996), Pierre Hébert est maintenant cinéaste et artiste indépendant. Depuis 2001, il a parcouru le monde avec son collègue musicien Bob Ostertag pour présenter plus de 80 fois la performance d’animation en direct Living Cinema. Il a également travaillé avec plusieurs autres musiciens dont Fred Frith, Lori Freedman, Stefan Smulovitz et Robert Marcel Lepage. Il a collaboré avec plusieurs compagnies de danse à Montréal, à New York et en France. Il a publié deux livres sur le cinéma ainsi que de nombreux articles dans des revues spécialisées. Depuis quelques années, il poursuit également une œuvre d’artiste visuel (dessin, installations, projets web). Couramment, son principal projet est la série de films « Lieux et monuments », pour lequel il a reçu en 2012 la prestigieuse bourse de carrière du Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. En 2016, avec le projet « Scratch », il renoue avec la gravure sur pellicule, technique qu’il avait abandonné en 2001 au profit de la technologie numérique. En 2005, il a été récipiendaire du prix du Québec «Albert Tessier» pour l’ensemble de son œuvre. En 2014, son court métrage Tu ressembles à moi / You Look like Me, coréalisé avec René Lussier, remportait le prix Guy-L. Côté du meilleur film d’animation canadien aux 13es Sommets du cinéma d’animation.

Since 2001, he traveled the world with his musician colleague Bob Ostertag presenting the Living Cinema live animation performance over 80 times. He also worked with many other musicians. He equally collaborated with dance companies in New York, Montreal and France and published two books and many articles on cinema and animation. He also pursue a carreer as a visual artist (drawings, installations, web projects). Currently, his main project is a new series of flims “Places and Monuments” for which he received from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec the prestigious «career grant» for cinema. In 2016, he In 2005, he was the recipient of the “Albert Tessier” cinema award from the Quebec government for lifetime achievement. In August 2016, with the project «Scratch», he resumed scratching on film, a technique he had abandonned in 2001 at the profit of digital technology. In 2014, his film You Look like Me / Tu ressembles à moi won the Guy-L. Coté Award for the Best Canadian Animation at the 13th Sommets du cinema d’animation.
