Research has identified teaching as one of the most stressful professions. Yet it can be hard, even for teachers, to describe exactly why this is so. In this public lecture, Dr. Jaime Beck and Lynsey Bechert share both research and experience-based perspectives on teacher workload and present heavy hours as one way to describe the challenges of teaching.
Dr. Jaime Beck completed her PhD in teacher education at the University of Alberta. She led a research project in which the term heavy hours was coined. Her other research interests include: beginning teacher induction, mentorship, and teacher professional wellness. In all her work, she seeks to support teachers in meeting the demands of their chosen profession.
Lynsey Bechert was part of a group of teachers to first workshop the term heavy hours. She has been teaching for 11 years in a variety of settings including teaching abroad in England. While primarily a high school English teacher, she has taught Social Studies and Special Education, and is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology.
